SV Capital is a private lending fund with a single focus: commercial agriculture in South Africa. Capital is lent against livestock, with the herd as the collateral and the offtake contracted before a facility opens. The minimum term is 18 months. Nine years of it, since our first cattle pool.
We work with institutional investors, family offices and capital advisers to develop investment opportunities aligned with their mandates, portfolio objectives and risk parameters.

SV Capital structures asset-backed lending opportunities in South African commercial agriculture. Each transaction is supported by identifiable underlying assets, a defined operating arrangement and a pre-agreed exit mechanism.
Capital finances the acquisition and feeding of weaner cattle through a commercial feedlot operation. The underlying exposure is to identifiable livestock managed by an established operating partner, rather than solely to movements in a cattle price index.
The herd provides the underlying collateral for the investment arrangement. Insurance is maintained against specified risks — disease, theft and natural hazards. The operating partner is responsible for veterinary care and biosecurity while the herd is in its custody.
One of the largest feedlot businesses in South Africa serves as the operating and offtake partner, managing the feeding process and contracting to purchase the livestock under the offtake arrangements. Counterparty due diligence forms part of the assessment conducted before an investment is approved.
The offtake arrangement is agreed in advance. Under the agreed commercial terms, the livestock is sold to the operating partner for further finishing, providing a defined route to market. The sale price and settlement are governed by the applicable offtake agreement.
The minimum term is 18 months, with the applicable term agreed before capital is deployed. The underlying cattle production cycle is approximately 120 days, allowing for multiple operating cycles within the financing term. Capital repayment follows the agreed facility terms and settlement arrangements.
Repayment is governed by the contractual arrangements. Actual outcomes depend on the performance of the underlying transaction and the parties meeting their contractual obligations. Any indicative return is a target, not a guarantee. Capital is at risk, and realised returns may differ from expectations.
The mechanics are the same whether an allocation comes from an institution, a family office or an adviser’s client. What changes is size, reporting cadence and the conversation that sets them.
Capital is allocated to a named pool against a defined herd, with a stated term and its own rate. Each pool stands alone, and a pool’s own performance is what settles it.
The provider is SmartVest Financial Services (Pty) Ltd, an authorised financial services provider, FSP 52449, which administers the funds invested. SV Capital is appointed as the alternative fund manager. Every allocation is governed by a written agreement naming both parties.
Each pool carries a factsheet per reporting period and settles into a statement showing capital, return and the basis each figure was arrived at. Figures are posted against the pool, not projected from a rate.
Investment size, reporting requirements, co-investment arrangements and other mandate-specific considerations are discussed before capital is deployed. We assess each proposed allocation against the transaction structure and the investor’s requirements to establish whether there is a suitable fit.
Target returns are based on the expected economics of the underlying transaction and are not guaranteed. Actual performance may differ from projections, and investors may lose some or all of their invested capital. Reported outcomes reflect the applicable contractual arrangements and the performance achieved.
We engage with advisers, family offices and capital-introduction partners to explore opportunities aligned with their clients’ investment mandates. Engagements can address the proposed allocation structure, reporting requirements and relevant due-diligence information, subject to the applicable arrangements.
A South African asset-backed lender, financing commercial cattle for nine years, since the first pool.
SmartVest Financial Services (Pty) Ltd is an authorised financial services provider, FSP 52449, regulated by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA). All investments are administered by SmartVest Financial Services. SV Capital is appointed as the alternative fund manager to structure investment opportunities. Each investment arrangement is subject to appropriate onboarding, due diligence and contractual documentation, with roles and responsibilities established before capital is deployed.
We apply appropriate investor onboarding including FICA and AML controls in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements. Our process establishes the identity and requirements of each investor, supports the necessary compliance checks and ensures that investment arrangements are documented before capital is deployed. For institutional investors and family offices, onboarding and reporting requirements are considered as part of the initial engagement.
Our commercial agriculture strategy is built around defined transactions, established operating relationships and identifiable underlying assets. In our cattle-lending model, capital supports livestock transactions managed through our operating partner. The structure incorporates livestock as collateral and an offtake arrangement agreed before a facility opens. Each transaction is assessed on its own merits, with due diligence, contractual arrangements and the relevant risk considerations established before deployment.
SV Capital’s track record reflects nine years of activity in commercial cattle investing, supporting productive assets and the businesses operating around them. Since the first herd of cattle, the business has deployed more than R200 million in capital, repaid over R30 million in returns to investors and supported more than 700 jobs across the businesses it finances. These figures reflect cumulative activity across the business, rather than the performance of any individual investment pool. Historical results are not indicative of future performance, and capital remains at risk.
Our commercial cattle structure supports livestock production and the businesses involved in bringing cattle to market. By participating in defined livestock transactions, SV Capital helps support commercial agricultural activity, operating businesses and employment across the value chain. Our impact is reflected in the scale of capital deployed, the historical returns paid to investors and the employment supported across the businesses we partner with.
